Chapter 3: DIAGRAMMING THE SENTENCE

3.0 DIAGRAMMING THE SENTENCE

Now we are ready to diagram the sentence.

Figure 1. Suggested Diagram for Matt 28:19-20 is a suggested way of diagramming the sentence. The benefit of a diagram is that is shows the relation of all the elements of a sentence to each other, and which elements are more important than others.

Clearly one can see the unexpressed subject is “you-pl”

The verb, the main action, is “disciple”

The “you-pl” are to be “discipling”

The discipling is done, “on the way through life” or “as you are passing through life.”

The means of discipling is through: 1) baptizing and 2) teaching.

The baptizing is INTO the name, specifically the single name jointly owned by both the Father, and the Son and also the Holy Spirit.

Baptism is into ONE name, not into THREE persons. However, those three persons do in fact share ownership of that ONE name, and baptism into one of them (i.e., Jesus) is the equivalent of baptism into the name jointly shared by all three of them.
